2022 - The Year of Blue Cheese
With over 195 different types of cheeses on tasting, it was BLUE CHEESE that proved to be the most popular on events days.
Not only did you vote via the MOULD Cheese Festival App, but you also voted with your wallets with two of the Top 3 cheeses being Blue.
So we thought here, we’d dive a little deeper into not only the PEOPLES CHOICE CHEESE of 2022, but third place, Grandvewe, and some of our other favourites
PEOPLES CHOICE CHEESE of 2022
AGED MILAWA BLUE
Milawa Cheese Co, Victoria
David and Ann Brown were ready to leave the hustle of Melbourne when they stumbled on an old butter factory in 1988, they knew they had found home. Now managed by daughter Ceridwen, Milawa continues to set the benchmark for Aussie cheese. Make sure you add their cheese room to your list of King Valley must-visits.
This blue is their classic Milawa Blue that has been hand selected to be matured for six extra months. The extra maturation provides more intensity. Rich and buttery is just the beginning. It is sharp, salty and expects the texture to be slightly crumbly.
Berry's Creek, Riverine Blue
GIPPSLAND, Victoria
Named after the breed of buffalo responsible for the milk of this cheese, this is the first of its kind on Australia and one of the very few buffalo blues in the world.
Fish Creek in South Gippsland is where you'll find cheesemakers Barry & Cheryl who truly specialise in blue cheese making. They also aren't scared to xperiment with milk types using cow, goat, sheep and of course, buffalo.
With many awards under their belt, including this one, these are cheeses to seek any and all times.
GRANDVEWE, Sapphire Blue
TASMANIA
Aged for between 3 - 4 month.
Texturally, it varies from crumbly through to smooth and creamy, but it’s pretty perfect at any point.
Robust as they get but like all true artisan cheese each batch can vary in strength. A little bit spicy at times, salty and smoky.
Most recently winning gold in “Australia’s Best Sheep Cheese” and bronze in “Australia’s Best Blue Cheese” at the international Cheese and Dairy Awards 2022
SOME OF OUR OTHER FAVOURITES!

PECORA
Robertson, NSW
Aged for three months is at peak maturity at six months, where it has a wonderful combination of a luscious mouth-feel, earthy spiciness, and hints of mixed peel and honeysuckle
A complex and subtle blue. -
COAL RIVER FARM
Tasmania
If you have friends who aren't quite on the same blue-loving level that you are, this is a great introduction. Mild, slightly sweet, tangy flavour balanced with just the right savouriness and blue bite.
